Graphic novelist and 9 other authors receive $50,000 Whiting Award | Entertainment

NEW YORK (AP) — The Hawaii-based graphic novelist, Economist affiliate reporter and New Yorker contributor are the recipients of this year’s Whiting Prize, an annual award given to 10 emerging fiction and A $50,000 honor for non-fiction writers.

R. Kikuo Johnson is the first graphic novelist to win the Whiting Award since the award’s inception in 1985, the Whiting Foundation announced Wednesday night. Other honorees include Linda Kinstler, who wrote for The Economist 1843 magazine; New Yorker writer Stephania Taladrid; fiction writers Marcia Douglas, Siddick Fofana and Caribbean Fragoza ; poets Tommye Blount and Ama Codjoe; playwright Mia Chung and poet and playwright Emma Wippermann.

“Each year we look forward to new Whiting Prize winners, writing fearlessly on the fringes of the imagination, revealing the paths of our thoughts and actions before we know them ourselves,” Courtney Hoddle, director of the Whiting Literary Program, said in a statement A statement said. “The award aims to create a relaxed space in which this type of transformative work can take place.”

Previous recipients include David Foster Wallace, Jeffrey Eugenides and Susan-Lori Parks.

Whiting Foundation Grant awards An annual selection of 10 new fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama writers who demonstrate early achievement and promise to leave a lasting mark on literary culture.
