(CNN) Actor Richard Dreyfuss doesn’t like the Academy Awards’ new diversity guidelines.

Films must meet at least two of four benchmarks, including – whether the lead cast is from an underrepresented group, or whether at least 30% of the cast and crew are from such groups.
Dreyfuss to Margaret Hoover Interviewed Friday on the PBS series “The Wire” Such a rule “makes me puke”.
When Hoover asked him why, the actor said, “Because it’s an art form.”
“It’s also a form of business, and it makes money,” the actor said. “But it’s an art. No one should tell me that, as an artist, I have to accept the latest and greatest morals.”
Inclusion standards were developed to address inequalities in the industry, which has given rise to #OscarsSoWhite 2015 campaign.
“I don’t think there’s a minority or a majority in this country that has to cater like that,” Dreyfuss continued in the interview.
He then cites some history about Laurence Olivier being “the last white actor to play Othello”, referring to the 1965 film in which the British actor performed in blackface
Dreyfuss praised the performance, saying Olivier played the role “brilliantly”.
“Did someone tell me I’d never get the chance to play black people?” Dreyfuss said. “Is someone telling people they shouldn’t play the Merchant of Venice if they’re not Jewish? Are we crazy? Don’t we know that art is art?”
Hoover countered that, given the history of slavery and the sensitivities surrounding black racism, “is there a difference between the issue of representation and who is allowed to represent other groups … and the case of blackface?”
“There shouldn’t be,” Dreyfuss said.
“Because it’s patronage,” he said. “Because it says we’re so vulnerable, we can’t let our feelings get hurt.”
CNN has reached out to Dreyfuss’ representatives for further comment but has not yet heard back.
