Emirates News Agency – NYU Abu Dhabi 2023 Master of Fine Arts graduate showcase opens at 421

ABU DHABI, 19th May, 2023 (WAM) — New York University Abu Dhabi, NYUAD, has announced the opening of SYNTHESIS, an exhibition showcasing the research and experiments of the university’s inaugural Master of Fine Arts (MFA) cohort, who combine questions and Ideas are visualized in a wide-ranging manner and provide valuable insights into our contemporary global condition.

The exhibition, which runs until 25 August 421, features 43 works by graduate students and artists Mahra AlFalahi, Liane Al Ghusain, Majd Alloush, Fabiola Chiminazzo and Elizabeth Dorazio. SYNTHESIS marks the second year of 421’s partnership with NYU.

Tina Sherwell, Director of the NYU Art and Art History MFA Program and Visiting Assistant Professor, said: “The NYU Two-Year MFA in Art and Media is the only program of its kind in the region, offering our graduate students the opportunity to study in the UAE’s leading arts program. 421, one of the institutions, to share their work. We are very proud of what our artists have achieved and look forward to welcoming the wider community throughout the exhibition.”

Said Faisal Al Hassan, Director of 421, said: “We are delighted to host NYU Abu Dhabi’s SYNTHESIS: 2023 MFA Graduate Exhibition. Our partnership feels like a perfect fit: two programs whose mission to support the emergence of emerging contemporary practices in the region fit together so seamlessly.”

In her work Cosmic Forest, Dorazio uses paint to highlight the random, unpredictable and constant movement of the natural world. In I Would Tread Lightly, Al Ghusain presents artwork related to the Palestinian diaspora, including geometric embroidery, series of sculptures, non-narrative videos and performances.

Alloush investigates the intersection of art and technology in his project Mapscapes; he explores the process of transforming pixels into tangible objects, with the aim of documenting the often overlooked urban and absurd landscapes around us.

AlFalahi’s Folded Stories project uses textiles, starting with her own childhood, to explore the influence of memory in storytelling and socializing. Chiminazzo’s Museum of Encounters uses archival images from photographs, books, prints and museum catalogs to investigate society’s redundant images.

NYUAD’s MFA is a two-year visual arts degree. It is designed as a full-time, interdisciplinary studio art program at the crossroads of practice and theory, tradition and artistic change. The program immerses students in contemporary research and artistic practice while training them to be deep thinkers and artistic innovators.

The course emphasizes artistic experimentation within the context of theoretical, cultural, and historical studies. Its multidisciplinary programs bridge disciplinary skills and different bodies of knowledge.
