It has great acting, but comedy, you hurt my feelings Avoid putting too much on the line. It exists in a comfortable middle ground – nothing is extreme.

you hurt my feelings, directed by Nicole Holofcener. Opens May 25 at AMC Boston Common 19, AMC Assembly Row, Somerville Theater

Julia Louis-Dreyfus you hurt my feelings.

you hurt my feelings It’s hard to pin down: It shifts from a light comedy to a drama about imposter syndrome. The story takes place in an upper-middle-class New York environment of writers and actors, filled with characters who may not be as talented as they think they are. To pick a member of the central quintet who isn’t an artist, Don (Tobias Menzies) is a mediocre therapist. Or at least his patients thought so. Their displeasure with him was a gossip. A Zoom meeting ended with a profiled man who mistakenly believed the microphone had been turned off, calling him an “idiot.” An unhappy couple (Amber Tamblyn and David Cross) can finally come together on one thing: They agree that they’ve wasted the $33,000 they spent on a two-year meeting with Don. In fact, they deserve a refund. Don was sympathetic, but there was little evidence that his patient was wrong.

Don’s wife, Beth (Julia Louis-Dreyfus Julia Louis-Dreyfus), is a writer and university professor. She felt she was competing with a new generation of young writers, including her students. Their 23-year-old son Elliott (Owen Teague) runs a legal marijuana dispensary, but dreams of following in his mom’s footsteps with his first feature. Fresh out of college, he still lives with his parents. Beth spends a lot of time chatting with her older sister Sarah (Michael Watkins), who works as a home improvement consultant. Sarah’s husband, Mark (Ariane Moayed), is a troubled actor tormented by his greatest success a decade ago.central conflict you hurt my feelings (and the source of its title) is finally introduced about a third of the way. Beth overhears Don admitting to Mark that he doesn’t like her new novel. He was too polite to tell her honestly, but it broke her heart when she found out what he was thinking.

Most of the roles in you hurt my feelings It’s middle-aged. (One could even get the sense that Eliot absorbed their personality traits.) They had enough money to worry about their artistic ambitions. (Mark expresses his displeasure with acting to Sarah—after he was fired from a play—and says he wants to quit the profession. “So, how are you going to make a living?” The question never comes up.) Yes , the New York of Holofcener’s films always feels a bit dated. Her work recalls a certain ’70s cinema: the films of Paul Mazursky, Claudia Weill and Elaine May. (May’s daughter Jenny Berlin plays Beth’s mother.) It also seems fitting that Holofcener’s stepfather, Charles Joffe, made early Woody Allen films. Those days are long gone: life has become more precarious for the urban middle class. Several Holofcener films show their protagonists volunteering to help the homeless — Beth and Sarah hand out clothes to them on weekend mornings — but the reality of the pervasiveness of extreme poverty isn’t quite as apparent in today’s New York.

Julia Louis-Dryefus’ career was defined by her two major TV roles: Elaine on Seinfeld and selena meyer vice-president. Ten years ago, she collaborated with Holofcener in the enough said. you hurt my feelings revolves around groups of people rather than individuals, so for some it might evoke Seinfeld. But the show’s casual grimness is at odds with Holofcener’s sensibilities. Even so, all the main characters express real pain at one point or another. The movie is pretty gentle with them, but to its credit, it doesn’t skimp on the pain they inflict on each other.

you hurt my feelings’ Thematic touches are witty, but a bit superficial. Confronted with harrowing stories of sexual abuse and prison life from her students, Beth feels that personal trauma has become an essential part of writing for contemporary readers. But she doesn’t think she has suffered enough. (Her current manuscript details her father calling her “stupid” and “brainless.”) The fact that trauma has become a bestseller in current literary fiction lingers, but the film doesn’t delve too deeply into the subject. Beth’s fears about the potential dangers of Elliott’s work at the weed dispensary – whose security guards seem to be its most loyal customers – are finally realized, but in a lighthearted way. Armed robbers grab their favorite strains without harming anyone.

Don’s desire to have plastic surgery plays a bigger role in the film, but even here, you hurt my feelings Avoid judging him or satirizing the popularity of plastic surgery for it. (Sarah admits she had Botox, but the film is more interested in male vanity.) Menzies’ performance remains steady deadpan; his interactions with Louis-Dreyfus are intimate, especially in Sarah Before learning what he thought of her book. The chemistry between the actors is a valuable asset to this film; we are given a sense of complex relationships and family dynamics.

Nevertheless, in the end, you hurt my feelings Avoid putting too much on the line. It exists in a comfortable middle ground – nothing is extreme. On the one hand, this modesty has its value; it gives the entire cast a chance to shine. However, what ended up happening was a little too safe. For most people in America today, their anxiety about their jobs—and their ability to do them well—is tied to their economic necessity. (Beth seems to do a fine job teaching a class in between classes for a semester.) Conveniently, you hurt my feelings Economic instability is removed from the picture, reducing his characters’ problems to purely personal ones. The result is a film that feels more like a pleasant but superficial short story than a full-blown comedy.
