Abu Dhabi Police warns residents of online scams, phishing

[ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Police has again warned residents to be vigilant against phishing and online fraud, following numerous reports of online fraud in the emirate.

Many recent incidents have involved phishing links sent via text message that appear to be from official sources. A few others also appear to offer access to services, or promise rewards for responders.

Cybercriminals use these methods to obtain confidential financial and personal information, which they then use to steal funds, police said.

In a social media post, authorities warned against sharing sensitive information of any kind, including bank cards and bank account numbers, online banking passwords, ATM PINs, card security numbers and one-time passwords.

Recent Scam Attempts

Speaking to Gulf News, a resident said he received a scam call this week that appeared to be from the police.

“I’ve been expecting money to be transferred into my account online. So when I got the call, I almost thought it was real. The caller said the money being transferred appeared to be from a suspicious source and my account would be flagged and blocked ,” said the longtime Asia resident.

The caller then asks the callee how much is in his account.

“It was like a red flag to me because I thought that if the caller was really calling from the police, he should have given me that information. So I refused to cooperate and hung up,” the resident said. explain.

keep vigilant

Abu Dhabi police say some criminals can gain access to bank accounts simply by getting people to open a text message.

The force is calling on residents to report any such attempts to police as soon as possible, and to avoid windfalls and rewards that sound too good to be true.
