UAE-based Silal has teamed up with Netherlands-based solar thermal desalination company Desolenator to launch a pilot project using solar desalination technology to produce pure water for irrigation and provide a sustainable cooling option for greenhouses.
Silal is part of ADQ, one of the largest holding companies in the region with a broad portfolio of major businesses covering key sectors of Abu Dhabi’s diversified economy.
This unique project poses zero harm to the environment and aims to contribute to the decarbonization of food production in desert climates by significantly reducing the carbon footprint of the desalination process.
The project is supported by ADQ’s AED100 million (US$27.2 million) research and development fund, which starts in 2022.
The fund is part of Growth Lab, a community of innovators within ADQ’s portfolio, delivering on the company’s commitment to accelerate innovation and R&D, focus on unlocking growth opportunities and driving value creation and sustainability in priority sectors of the UAE economy .
The project aims to demonstrate how innovative partnerships can address the water-food-energy nexus and demonstrate sustainable agriculture for countries around the world.
It also marks a paradigm shift in addressing the important water-food-energy nexus, demonstrating the power of collaborative innovation in advancing the global sustainable development goals. –trade arab news agency
