Ha-BB is coming from Dubai…
Al Maryah Island is one of the most prestigious dining districts in the entire Middle East, which is largely helped by the two luxury hotels flanking the Galleria promenade. It’s one of those — the palatial Rosewood Hotel, home to the island’s newest Hall of Fame signing.
Straight out of DIFC, BB Social Dining is a true Dubai dining gem – an Asian restaurant frequented by the Dubai Royal Family on more than one occasion. Founded by culinary chefs Alexander Stump and Spero Panagakis, it’s famous for dividing the menu into boxes that begin with the letter ‘B’. Think Baos, bowls, snacks and grills. “Beets, Bears, and Battlestar Galactica” was snubbed presumably at the last minute (sorry to anyone who didn’t like it this American office).
B is fresh
The Abu Dhabi restaurant has just opened its doors in its bright and airy new location, and as well as shipping in a slew of its Insta-famous fan favorites from Dubai, it’s also serving up some new dishes unique to the capital.
Other new and unique additions to this Abu Dhabi adventure include a shisha terrace with water features, which is sure to draw crowds to Xiangyun once the weather improves a bit. Elsewhere, the brand’s strong yet subtle voice is clearly communicated through bold lines, bespoke art, large neon signs, botanical elements and blue and white benches.
The arrival of our first edible set frees us from our design fantasies. This is Crispy Soy Brussels Sprouts (Dhs45) and Cauliflower Popcorn (Dhs45). Both have their own cult followings in Dubai, and for good reason. The former is an unrivaled ambassador for this unfairly maligned festive vegetable, careful to uncover any biases you may have previously lurked beneath your canopy.
B is for Big Taste
dessert. These Abu Dhabi exclusives really deserve applause, and while the succulent prawns and lobster char siu (Dhs55) won our favourite, it wasn’t easy picking a winner. The East-meets-West fusion inside the exquisite Wagyu Gyoza (Dhs55) also marks this as an instant classic. We raved about the bright sparks of adding spicy tomato salsa to the dipping sauce trilogy.
Hamachi sushi (Dhs45), served with a thin layer of jalapenos, was our recommendation from our nigiri talent pool. But amidst the cacophony of quality that makes up the BB menu, the truffled rib eye steak (Dhs189) came in strong and stole the belt. Cubes for easy chopstick handling are served with charred truffles and smoked aubergine sauce – an eclectic, artful, sophisticated dish that exemplifies the brand.
B is to defend
We finish off with the donut (AED 52), a fluffy donut variant made of bagged pastry, coated with sugar and served with berry jam. A sublime and refined way to preserve freshness.
Verdict: This venue may be known for its B’s, but it’s all As for us.
