Brasilia [Brazil], 18th June (ANI/WAM): Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, will lead a high-level UAE delegation to Brazil on 14-15 June 2023 to discuss the UAE-Brazil strategic partnership in various fields. The visit follows President Lula da Silva’s state visit to the UAE on April 15, 2023, his first official visit to the Middle East since his election earlier this year.

During his visit, Hashemi met with senior officials, including: Celso Amorim, Chief Advisor to the Brazilian Presidency; Rodrigo Otavio Pacheco, President of the Federal Senate and National Assembly; Vice President and Development, Industry and Commerce Minister Geraldo Alckmin and Environment and Climate Change Minister Marina Silva. The two sides discussed cooperation across key areas, including renewable energy, science and technology, sustainable development, climate action, aviation, space, food safety and agriculture, transportation and logistics. In her opening remarks at the UAE-Brazil Business Forum, Al Hashimy praised the growing bilateral relationship – non-oil bilateral trade between the two countries surpassed $4 billion in 2022, a 32% increase from the previous year – and stressed the need to continue to build on the relationship between the two countries. Explore promising business and investment opportunities in Chinese markets and deepen people-to-people ties.

Furthermore, discussions during the visit focused on the negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the UAE and Mercosur. The two sides also discussed efforts to advance cooperation between the BRICS bloc and the UAE.

In addition, Hashemi also met with the Minister of Energy, Alexandre Silveira, and signed a memorandum of understanding between the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy on cooperation in the field of renewable energy. The two sides explored areas to enhance trade and investment between the two countries. The conference was attended by various Emirati companies such as Mubadala and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), Masdar and DP World.

The UAE hosted the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) this year, and the two countries expressed their shared commitment to jointly address the challenge of climate change and build a sustainable future for generations to come. Furthermore, the UAE welcomed the announcement of Brazil’s bid to host COP30 in 2025.

Saleh Al Suwaidi, UAE Ambassador to Brazil, hosted a dinner for Al Hashimy and Minister of Indigenous Peoples Sonia Guajajara, in which Al Hashimy affirmed the UAE’s commitment to the values ​​of tolerance and coexistence and highlighted the importance of harnessing the knowledge and values ​​of indigenous peoples for sustainable development and protect biodiversity.

In the spirit of the UAE’s commitment to the advancement of science and technology, Hashemi visited the University of Brasília and announced the UAE’s donation of US$2 million to restore the university’s central library.
