MIFLLINGTON (United States), June 18 (AP) — Officials expressed shock and sadness over the weekend death and serious injury of a state trooper in central Pennsylvania over the weekend.

Juniata County police said a man engaged soldiers near the Lewistown Barracks around 12:45 p.m. Saturday and shot and killed a soldier who was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Authorities located the man in the town of Walker, a few miles away, shortly before 3 p.m., and a shootout ensued that killed the gunman and a soldier, police said.

The names of the killed soldiers and suspects, as well as those of the wounded soldiers, were not immediately released.

State Police Gov. Josh Shapiro and Col. Christopher Paris are hospitalized and wounded soldiers are being treated, state police said.

Shapiro later said in a social media post that the wounded soldier was in critical but stable condition and that he and the commissioner thanked his colleagues for their service and prayed for his recovery.

The governor said he and First Lady Lori Shapiro “send our love to the family of the soldier who died today. May his memory be a blessing.”

The Pennsylvania Police Fraternity said it was “appalled” by the shooting of “not one, but two” officers, one of whom made the “ultimate sacrifice.”

“Brave and honor best describe these soldiers, and we will always remember their deeds of valor,” Joseph Regan, the chapter’s president, said in a social media post.

David Kennedy, president of the Pennsylvania Soldiers Association, a group of 4,300 active and ex-servicemen, said the Union “lost a hero while another fought for his life.”

“The bravery of these soldiers and their loved ones will always be in our hearts,” he said in a post on social media. (Associated Press)
