Jemaah Islamiyah and the BJP have been at odds since Murtaza Wahab won the Karachi mayoral race in a close last week. In contrast, the JI was backed by 61 PTI members, bringing Rehman’s forecasted number of votes to 192. PPP joined forces with PML-N and JUI-F, increasing their combined strength to 173.

Wahab got all 173 expected votes, while Rehman got just 160, as 30 union council members opted not to participate in the voting process. According to JI, the provincial government allegedly forced PTI members to reject the election.

On June 17, the party also celebrated “Black Day” and organized protests across the country.

Speaking at a news conference in Karachi on Monday, Rahman said the party was considering bringing a convoy of protesters from Karachi to the federal capital on June 23.

“We cannot accept these sham and rigged elections,” he asserted, adding that the BJP “illegally carried out its mission in Karachi to keep its donkey network alive.”

Rehman added that the ECP had utterly failed to hold free and fair elections in Karachi, questioning how the agency was able to hold polls across the country. “It’s just a trailer, the whole movie hasn’t been released yet.”

According to Dawn, the head of JI Karachi also promised that his party would take all legal and constitutional avenues to bring the truth to light. (Arnie)
