Sports & Entertainment Spotlight: NBA’s Ja Morant faces suspension, Peacock Emmy deal and more! | Foster Garvey PC

[ad_1]

Welcome back to the spotlight. It’s officially summer, and life is easy…or at least (in theory) it should be when you’re living in the (ahem…) spotlight. But with great star power comes great responsibility (Sidebar: I’m pretty sure this is the only time today you’ll read a reference to “Porgy and Bess” followed by “Spider-Man”). That’s the lesson the NBA is trying to teach All-Star Ja Morant, who has been handed a 25-game suspension at least twice for flashing a gun on social media (the first such incident resulted in a six-game suspension). Morant, whose talent has been lauded by the league for appealing to a younger generation of basketball fans like superstars like LeBron James, now finds himself in a precarious position with the league and his endorsement partners. While none of Morant’s contracts appear to have been terminated, another mistake could bring Morant back down to earth — a cautionary tale for public figures in the age of social media and this year’s NBA draft. Classes should be wise to know this. record.

  • NBC’s streaming service, Peacock, has won the naming rights to the Los Angeles theater where the Emmy Awards are held. People might think the name is clever and that it signifies a place to show off and be seen, but I think it’s just poultry.
  • YouTube has announced that each subscription will allow unlimited simultaneous live streams as part of this year’s first season of NFL Sunday Ticket programming. Cord cutters and cat video fans will no doubt be delighted to be able to watch Week 5 between the Panthers and Lions.
  • AI, machine learning music platform WAVS.AI, which made a wav(e) to play an AI-generated fake Drake song “Heart on My Sleeve,” has raised $20 million. The company will use a few hundred dollars of that to buy a companion (microwave oven) for its artificial intelligence machines, and the rest will go toward paying the company’s legal costs.
  • Recording artist INFJ Kenzo has signed a $60 million debut record deal with an Israeli investment company. Maybe I’m getting old, but that’s a lot of money for someone I only heard about five minutes ago.
