The 204th Army Band of the Army Reserve, Fort Snelling, Minnesota, performed for the event audience during the 2023 Fort McCoy Army Birthday Celebration at the Fort McCoy Community Center on June 14.
The band played for the hundreds who came to McCoy’s for a free lunch and a cake-cutting ceremony, along with music, of course.
The last time the band performed live was at the 2023 Fort McCoy Armed Forces Day Open House event in May. The band also performed at the 2022 Fort McCoy Army Birthday Celebration.
Band members perform on stage in the courtyard of the McCoy Community Center during the 2023 celebration.
The 2023 Army Birthday Celebration is organized by the Fort McCoy Family and the Department of Morale, Welfare and Recreation. DFMWR Director Patric McGuane knew guests were in for some great entertainment as he welcomed everyone to the free lunch.
“Thank you everyone for being here,” McGuane said. “We have a lot of delicious food and entertainment for you today.”
The band played for more than two hours and played many popular songs, which were well received.
Their dedication to the show may reflect what Colonel Stephen Major, Commander of the Garrison at Fort McCoy, said in his address to the luncheon guests.
“Today’s Army is the best-led, best-trained and most-capable Army the planet has ever seen,” Messenger said. “Consider it. There is no other military stronger than the one we serve in, and we will continue to meet these challenges with extraordinary skill and dedication.”
In addition to the band performance and associated lunch and cake-cutting ceremony, Fort McCoy hosted the Commander’s 5K/2-mile run/walk, as well as free breakfast in the morning and bowling in the afternoon at McCoy’s.
As part of the event, the Messenger also held the enlistment oath for six enlisted recruits. They enlisted that same year, and the U.S. Army updated its “do what you can” motto. Perhaps with the Messenger’s speech and the spirit of the day, it will be a day to remember for them too.
Fort McCoy was founded in 1909 with the motto “Total Troop Training Center.” Located in the heart of the northern Midwest, Fort McCoy is the only U.S. Army installation in the state of Wisconsin.
Since 1984, the facility has provided support and facilities for the field and classroom training of more than 100,000 military personnel from all services on a nearly annual basis.
