Former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett dies in accidental drowning at 35

Earlier national football league Quarterback Ryan Mallett accidentally drowned in Florida. He is 35 years old.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Mallet’s death in a statement Tuesday Share on Facebook.

According to OCSO, first responders were called to the beach behind 775 Gulf Shore Drive in Destin around 2:00 p.m. when they spotted a group of people in the water near the second sandbar and were reportedly struggling to return to shore, according to OCSO. .

One of the adult males, later identified as Mallet, sank in the water, and lifeguards said he was not breathing when he was pulled out. Life-saving measures were immediately taken and Mallett was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the apparent drowning.

Mallett played in college for the Michigan Wolverines and Arkansas Razorbacks from 2007 to 2010. He was the 2010 Liberty Bowl Offensive MVP and was named to the SEC Second Team in 2009 and 2010, finishing seventh in Heisman Trophy voting that same year.

A third-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, Mallett was selected by the New England Patriots with the 74th overall pick in 2011, serving as Tom Brady’s backup for three seasons.

In 2014, he was traded to the Houston Texans and stayed there for two seasons before being traded to the Baltimore Ravens. Mallett played two more seasons with the Ravens before retiring from the league in 2017.

After his NFL career, Mallett began coaching, joining the coaching staff at Whitehall High School in his hometown of Arkansas.

Whitehall High School released a statement Tuesday on the school website regarding Mallet’s death, writing, “It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Coach Ryan Mallet.”

The statement continued, “Coach Mallet was a beloved coach and educator. We ask that his family, team, students, coaching colleagues and Whitehall School District staff be remembered in your prayers.”

Mallett’s former teammate JJ Watt also responded to the news, tweet, “Read terrible news about Ryan Mallett. Gone too soon. RIP bro.”
