Warner Bros.’ long-awaited Barbie movie banned in Vietnam.

The film was originally scheduled to be released in the country on July 21, but was banned from domestic release after one of the scenes showed a map. China’s China has unilaterally claimed territorial sovereignty over the South China Sea, state media reported.

Chinese maps use a U-shaped “nine-dash line” to illustrate its claims to many areas of the South China Sea, including areas that Vietnam considers part of its continental shelf and has granted oil concessions.

“We did not grant permission for the American film ‘Barbie’ to be released in Vietnam because it contained offensive nine-dash images,” said Vi Kien Thanh, head of the film department. Censoring foreign films, told Tuoi Tre newspaper.

What other movies are banned in China?

“Barbie” is not the first movie to face a ban in the country.

In 2019, vietnamese The government also pulled DreamWorks’ animated film “Snowman,” and banned Sony’s action film “Uncharted” in 2022 for the same reason.

In 2021, Netflix also removed Pine Gap from its service in Vietnam following a complaint from Vietnamese broadcast officials.

Other shows and movies banned in the country include Family Guy, The Hunger Games, Full Metal Jacket and Platoon, according to IMDB.

Vietnam and China have long had overlapping territorial claims to potentially energy-rich waters of the South China Sea.

The Southeast Asian nation has repeatedly accused Chinese ships of violating its sovereignty.
