MOSCOW, July 3 (Xinhua) — U.S. Ambassador Lynn Tracy was granted permission Monday to meet Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gerkovich. Gkovich has been jailed in Russia since March on espionage charges.

Tracy last visited Grkovich in April. The U.S. embassy confirmed Monday’s visit but did not immediately provide additional information.

Gershkovic and his employer have denied the allegations, and the U.S. government has declared he was wrongfully detained.

His arrest has rattled Russian journalists, with authorities offering no evidence to support the espionage allegation.

Gershkovic was being held in Moscow’s Lefortovo prison, which is notorious for harsh conditions.

He is the first American journalist to face espionage charges in Russia since US News & World Report’s Moscow correspondent Nicholas Daniloff was arrested by the KGB in September 1986. Danilov was released 20 days later in exchange for an employee of the Soviet Mission to the United Nations, who was arrested by the FBI, also on espionage charges. (Associated Press)
