Abu Dhabi announces multilingual civil marriage service

ABU DHABI: The Abu Dhabi Judiciary Department (ADJD) has launched civil marriage services for non-Muslim expats, authorities announced on Wednesday (November 9).

In a post on its social media platform, ADJD said it has so far offered services in five languages, including Arabic, English, Russian, Chinese and Spanish.

Earlier this year, the ADJD said that since the civil marriage law in the emirate of Abu Dhabi came into effect in January 2022, an average of 25 civil marriage applications were registered per hour, or four applications per hour.

The government of Abu Dhabi allows non-Muslim citizens to marry under its Law No. 14 of 2021 on the personal status of non-Muslim expatriates. Civil marriage is the legal union of a non-Muslim man and woman, solemnly treated as a civil contract and based on secular rules. It is governed by Articles 4 and 5 of Law No. 14 of 2021. The law also allows marriages between couples of different faiths.

UAE residents, tourists and tourists can apply for marriage under the new law, provided the applicant is a non-Muslim or a citizen of a non-Muslim country.
