Abu Dhabi Electric Hypercar Sets 503 km/h World Record
Abu Dhabi electric hypercar has made international automotive headlines after a Chinese electric hypercar reached a record speed of 503.17 km/h on a closed section of the E11 highway in the Al Dhafra region.
The YANGWANG U9 Xtreme, developed by Chinese automotive manufacturer BYD, achieved the record on November 1, 2026. The achievement was officially announced by Abu Dhabi authorities on November 6.
German racing driver Marc Basseng was behind the wheel during the record-breaking run on Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Road. The vehicle became the first production car to cross the 500 km/h speed barrier.
According to Guinness World Records, the achievement secured two records: the highest speed achieved by a production car in a single-direction run and the highest speed achieved by an electric production car in the same category.
How Did the Electric Hypercar Reach 503 km/h?
The YANGWANG U9 Xtreme uses four independent electric motors that produce more than 3,000 PS of combined power. Its advanced 1,200-volt electrical system helps deliver the power required for extreme performance.
The vehicle also features an advanced suspension system, specialised high-performance tyres and technology designed to maintain stability at high speeds.
The record attempt took place over two days, with authorities arranging the closure of a 10-kilometre road section. Engineers adjusted the car’s suspension, aerodynamics and tyre pressures before the final run on November 1.
The new speed surpassed the vehicle’s previous record of 496.22 km/h, achieved in Germany in September 2025.
Why Abu Dhabi Was Chosen for the Record Attempt
Abu Dhabi Investment Office, Abu Dhabi Mobility, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and other government authorities supported the project.
The achievement highlights Abu Dhabi‘s ability to host major automotive and technology demonstrations. It also strengthens the emirate’s growing engagement with international automotive manufacturers.
The record represents an important milestone for electric vehicle technology, showing how far high-performance electric cars have advanced in recent years.
