From designing to building new naval and merchant ships, Abu Dhabi Shipyards (ADSB) has become a regional leader in shipbuilding.
Emirates Shipbuilding designs, builds new ships, repairs, maintains, refits and refits vessels for local and international clients.
The company’s main shipyard is located in the Mussafah Industrial Zone in Abu Dhabi, with a total area of more than 300,000 square meters. Four large air-conditioned warehouses, six open spaces and satellite stores facilitate storage and distribution on the project site. The shipyard warehouse allows storage of all critical project specific items and inventory items required for daily operations.
Over the years, ADSB has grown from strength to strength, providing quality vessels and ongoing lifetime support to the regional and global naval, commercial and luxury yachting industries.
As one of the most advanced shipyards in the Middle East, ADSB operates three major naval programs: Frigates, Offshore Patrol Vessels and Fast Patrol Vessels.
The UAE company also provides a full range of maintenance, repair and modification, upgrades and retrofits, and engineering consultancy services.
In the past 26 years since its founding in 1996, ADSB has built more than 250 ships made of steel, aluminum and advanced composite materials, and repaired or maintained hundreds of others.
The company handles the entire shipbuilding process from AZ

The company builds naval vessels primarily for naval, coast guard and firefighting applications, commercial vessels primarily for oil and gas applications, and transport vessels for passengers. ADSB also aims to build luxury vessels with international partners.
In an exclusive interview with Khaleej Times, ADSB Director of Shipbuilding and Engineering Francesco Monaco said the state-of-the-art strategic shipyard in the UAE handles all in-house design from concept to basic detail engineering, production, commissioning the vessel and delivering it to the client.
“Today, ADSB is able to come up with the concept design, sit with the client to evaluate the design requirements, draw the main specifications and prepare the layout, etc. We also handle all the basic engineering parts of the vessel, including the systems and integration of all related equipment, production up to the completion of the vessel, ” He added that ADSB designs and builds highly complex vessels for naval and commercial clients.
He noted that the company has the technical and operational expertise to serve vessels of all sizes, whether they are involved in littoral combat operations, patrol missions or exclusive economic zone protection.
ADSB specializes in the construction, maintenance, repair, conversion and conversion of naval and merchant ships.
“We deploy the latest technology to maximize fleet readiness, extend vessel life and reduce overall life cycle costs,” Monaco said, adding that the company has built and delivered state-of-the-art in the past for the UAE Navy and others ship customers.
“Over the past two years, we have built a variety of vessels for different clients. These include VIP luxury transports that can accommodate up to 60 people, military vessels such as fast interceptors, fast patrol boats, and ships that support the oil and gas industry. transport ship.”

It takes eight to 36 months to build a ship, depending on size and complicity, and the company is apparently working on about 30 new projects, the official said.
According to Monaco, over the years ADSB has successfully expanded its international presence through partnerships with leading industry players in Europe, the US and Asia to ensure its clients have access to the most cutting-edge solutions on the market.
“While we will continue to develop the UAE’s sovereign capabilities, the company places greater emphasis on export sales and contributing to a competitive knowledge-based economy,” he said.
ADSB employs hundreds of workers and UAE nationals are mainly involved in the production process of shipbuilding. One of the vessels, Majed-01, is a 12-meter long vessel on display at NAVDEX 2021, designed by a UAE national.
“I am proud to have come up with the concept of the Majed-01 vessel. We designed and built the entire vessel from the UAE,” said Majed Al Falasi, the designer of the Majed 01 vessel, who is also ADSB’s Composite Manager.

ADSB’s many achievements include the successful delivery of the region’s largest naval shipbuilding programme for the UAE Navy’s six Baynunah-class frigates and the Aialah Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV).
“The Baynunah is a top class vessel, our flagship and the pride of ADSB. It is the most advanced and highly technical frigate currently operating in the UAE,” Monaco said.
“We built six frigates with strategic partners, but ADSB played the role of the main shipyard. Baynunah was fully assembled, commissioned and delivered at ADSB.”
In 2021, ADSB signed the company’s largest ever contract – a Dh3 billion deal to build four FALAJ3 OPV vessels for the UAE Navy.
The first prototype 12m and 16m fast patrol boats were unveiled at NAVDEX 2021 last year. ADSB has a healthy order pipeline that allows it to sustain and grow well into the future as other designs and prototypes are developed.
Future plans for Abu Dhabi’s shipbuilding capacity
Regarding the future development and achievement of the ADSB’s shipbuilding capabilities in Abu Dhabi, Monaco stated that their main goal is to massively increase the company’s naval shipbuilding capabilities.
“We aim to design and build state-of-the-art frigates and even larger sites and develop in-house designs for offshore supply vessels for the oil and gas industry. We are also working to increase the ratio of electric and hybrid to catch up with the current global Green energy requirements implemented within the scope.
The Abu Dhabi company also hopes to work with its strategic partners to develop autonomous and artificial intelligence (AI) vessels that can operate using self-systems on board.
Monaco claims that a country with in-house shipbuilding capabilities is important to the UAE because it does not have to rely on other countries, and the country owns the intellectual property of its designs, which can be licensed or sold to other countries.
“The maritime industry in the region is growing very rapidly. The Gulf region has a large number of ships in need of maintenance, upkeep, basic refurbishment or upgrading, or even replacement of older ships, which makes shipbuilding a very important sector for a country to support the maritime cluster,” he said.
Rapidly evolving technology is one of the challenges ADSB faces, but the company made sure to invest money, time and other resources to overcome it.
The company’s strategic partners include the UAE Navy, the Critical Infrastructure Coastal Protection Authority (CICPA), ADNOC and other international partners and customers.
