Afghan expatriate in UAE feels ‘reborn’ after near-fatal car crash

[ad_1]

DUBAI: An Afghan expatriate recently survived a near-fatal car crash thanks to a hemorrhage in one of the most important blood vessels in his brain, in an operation that lasted four hours.

Dr Khaldoun Osman, Consultant Neurosurgeon (Spine Microsurgery), Saudi German Hospital, Dubai, said the patient, Nasser Ahmad Ghani Zada, in his 40s, had a large epidural hematoma after a car accident.

Zada recovered quickly after the operation and is currently in stable physical condition without any complications. He said: “I am grateful to the doctors at the Saudi German Hospital, especially Dr. Othman for their great efforts. I feel like I have been reborn.”

An epidural hematoma is a collection of blood between the skull and the outermost protective membrane that covers the brain. After Zada’s skull was fractured in the accident, his artery was torn.

“A large epidural hematoma pressing on the forebrain, complex injuries to the skull, various fractures extending down to the base of the skull, and the patient had a 5cm protruding wound on the forehead,” Dr Osman told Gulf News.

how the surgery is done

Dr Osman said: “After initial stabilization, the patient was immediately transferred to the operating room and underwent a craniotomy. [surgery to cut an opening in the skull] It was performed urgently to reduce the hematoma.

“The frontal sinuses were then cleaned and filled with living peritoneum [thin plastic tube] prevent cerebrospinal fluid leakage [the saltwater that surrounds and cushions the brain and spinal cord]. After the dura is lifted, multiple bony parts are repaired together [brain connective tissue] to prevent any possible accumulation of fluid on the brain,” he continued.

“The operation was performed in record time. The patient was photographed, diagnosed and operated on within four hours, which helped save the patient from complications that nearly killed him.”

precision intervention

Dr. Osman explained that Zada’s injury affected the skull and was associated with a high risk of meningitis and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaking from the nose. “This was avoided by a quick and precise surgical procedure,” he said.

“During the operation, it was discovered that the superior sagittal sinus, one of the largest blood vessels in the brain, was damaged. If it had been damaged in any way, it would have been fatal. We had to intervene very accurately and quickly.”

be careful on the road

RoadSafetyUAE said that the UAE has made good progress in improving road safety and reducing road accidents, casualties. But the campaign added that it was important to remind motorists of the basic rules of road safety “over and over again”.
1. Defensive driving
2. Do not exceed the speed limit. Each tour starts 10 minutes earlier
