Art and other events in the park showcase year-round entertainment

There’s no shortage of offerings to encourage Anne Arundel County residents to get outside and enjoy what’s happening in the area. Below is a sample of events from this summer and beyond.

art in the park

Cafe Mezzanotte and voice of sevena parker are teaming up for the third annual Art in the Park, which will be held at the Severna Park Restaurant on October 1st. Great music, compelling art, and the smells and tastes of Mediterranean cuisine will be on offer for attendees.

“The event will be a sensory experience,” said Jonathan Katz, voice of sevena parker Vice President of Business Development and Sales Manager. Kosmas “Tommie” Koukoulis, owner of Cafe Mezzanotte, says the art in the park stems from the success of his restaurant’s jazz at Mezz events, which feature professional acts that tour Washington, D.C., and Annapolis.

Koukoulis hopes to turn the pop into more of an outdoor festival with multi-dimensional art and jazz. The inaugural art exhibition in the park was a hit.

This year, the event will feature local and regional talent. With multiple musicians booked, at least half a dozen local artists will be exhibiting and selling their work, and the restaurant staff will serve up Cafe Mezzanotte’s classic Mediterranean fare. Painters and potters will give live demonstrations throughout the event.

“We’re lucky to have our own outdoor patio and courtyard for musicians to use,” Koukoulis said. “Additionally, we will be opening double doors leading to a private ballroom for an art gallery selling up to 100 works of art.”

Whether shopping or adding to your collection, Koukoulis says there is something for everyone to suit their level of interest in art. Both he and Katz are excited about music, including musicians Sweet Leda and Lower Case Blues.

Sweet Leda is a fusion of neo-funk, psychedelic rock, soul and pop. The group describes itself as “female-led, soul-based, Led Zeppelin meets Chili”.

The group has won numerous awards and has shared the stage with Galaxy, 311 and Jefferson Starship.

Katz praised frontman Julie Cymek’s ability not only as a blues artist, but also her talent for using multiple musicians in different ways to create the band’s signature sound.

Inducted into the Delaware Blues Hall of Fame, the Lower Case Blues are known as the tri-state area blues, rock and funk band. The group has shared the stage and collaborated with industry heavyweights such as Buddy Guy, Marcus King, Blues Traveler and Grand Funk Railroad.

Attendees can also enjoy the popular food at Cafe Mezzanotte.

“We’re going to have a small mobile kitchen and bar in the yard to add a festive touch and to have a nice smell when cooking food outside,” Koukoulis said. “People can also get beer and wine from outdoor bars.”

While the menu has yet to be confirmed, Koukoulis plans to add festive-style “fun items” such as meat, vegetable skewers and deep-fried desserts.

A portion of event proceeds will benefit Providence Center, a nonprofit organization that supports people with disabilities to live their best lives.

More information, as well as ticket sales, will be announced in early August.
