The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Canada overcame tenacious performances from Papua New Guinea and Jersey respectively to take the first point in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup qualifying play-offs and maintain their chances of progressing to the next round.
On the second day of competition, the United Arab Emirates beat vibrant Papua New Guinea (PNG) by 21 points, while Canada beat Jersey by 31 points.
An inspired Chad Soper (4-43) got his side off to a fantastic start, getting the most value with the new ball and taking four wickets in the opening overs.
UAE skipper Muhammad Waseem went it alone for the first 20 overs as no other batsman was available. However, the presence of 17-year-old Aayan Khan freed Waseem and the batsman upped the ante after reaching 50. He hit 3 sixes in Charles Amini’s fifth over to score 21 points.
However, the batsman was four runs behind in his percentile, allowing Semo Kamea (2/38) to score his second success. That didn’t stop Aayan, though, who took the initiative from Waseem and went all-in at the end of the innings. Thanks to his running ball 94, the Emirates finished 260/7.
Kiplin Doriga and Tony Ura helped PNG get off to a good start, adding 145 runs in the opening 20 rounds. Doriga attacked in the initial round, while Ura joined in the celebrations after settling down.
Ura was sent off in the 21st over, which put the UAE back in the game. Leg-spinner Karthik Meiyappan (4-44) went on to pick four wickets as PNG slipped from 146/0 to 162/5.
Given the explosive start, Papua New Guinea’s batsmen can take their time and settle down. They try to do the same, while also drifting away from their goals.
However, the UAE bowlers proved indomitable and delivered wickets on a regular basis. Zahoor Khan (3-49), Aayan (1-33) and Junaid Siddique (1-23) cleared the lower order to help the UAE win.
Canada’s top order lacked application rather than intent, as shown by losing four batsmen for 56 runs in the first 10 overs. Over the same period ODI rookie Jersey was erratic and lost 16 play-offs, but the damaged wicket meant the North American team could not take advantage and was forced into a rebuilding phase.
Fortunately for them, goalkeepers Srimantha Wijeyeratne (63) and Harsh Thaker (27) provided stability for the fifth wicket through their 62-run partnership. Wijeyratne was joined by veteran Nikhil Dutta (56) after Thaker lost in the 24th innings.
The two joined forces for a crucial 70 games. A lack of wickets at hand and disciplined bowling from Jersey meant Canada could only add 54 runs in their final 10 overs.
Jersey got off to a good start, chasing 239 goals. After hitting 36 for the first wicket with Harrison Carlyon, Nick Greenwood (59) added 81 for the second wicket with Josh Lawrenson.
Greenwood’s loss disrupted the batting momentum, although Josh Lawrenson did his best to keep the game together while helping Jersey get closer to goal.
Canada found their way into the game, however, after Dutta (2-30) beat Lawrenson for 66 in the 40th over. With Canada leading by 61 and two new batsmen in the wickets, it’s still anyone’s game.
Skipper Saad Bin Zafar (3-51) led the bowling team with the 43rd double wicket. The jersey was eventually eliminated in the 48th inning.
