Yes, “The Bear” is a comedy series — at least, it’s been designated that way throughout the winter awards cycle, and it’s slated for this summer’s 2023 Emmys. The DGA Awards, Critics’ Choice Awards, Writers Guild and more honor Christopher Stoller’s half-hour original series in the comedy category, with the cast vying for two SAGs Sunday night with ‘Abbott Elementary,’ ‘Barry,’ and more prize. ”, “Hacks” and “Only Murders in the Building” – with it in PGA Award.

As awards experts know, the success of one guild does not guarantee the success of another. The PGA Awards tend to reward runaway success stories, and “The Bear” was a true ubiquitous hit. Producers Josh Senior and Tyson Bidner (who were on hand to accept the honor) helped make a show about Chicago kitchen workers a ferocious, addictive, genre-bending breakout. The FX production has found an audience on Hulu, and with a second season expected to air this summer, there’s no reason to think the momentum will wane.
But is it a comedy series? It’s a question that resurfaces every year as TV shows designed to push boundaries are forced into one of three boxes for award-winning reasons, but “The Bear” probably has to think about it more than most. While comparing the dark comedy of “Barry” to the heart-pounding pressure of preparing the best beef in Chicago seems feasible, Stoller’s series will have to contend with the hilarious climax of “Ted Lasso” and the outrageous silliness of “What.” We Do in the Shadows” from the Emmy voting. (Not to mention “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders.”) With so many contests actually built around laughter, “The Bear” would be like thumbs up Equally outstanding or outclassed?
Similar questions will surround “White Lotus” — which won the PGA Drama Series award Saturday night — but they are unlikely to get in the way of Mike White’s beloved series. For those who need a reminder: “White Lotus” ran as a limited series in its first season, and it did pretty well. SAG, PGA, DGA and WGA nominations build on an Emmy run that ended with 10 gold statues. As we all know, the future of the series was set – but then Jennifer Coolidge returned for season 2, making it ineligible for an Emmy in the limited series category. (The anthology series was accepted, but once voters saw season 2, they realized that Coolidge’s role was enough for a “continuing storyline,” forcing a switch to comedy or drama.)
So, how does this shift affect Season 2? In short, it doesn’t. “White Lotus” season 2 has now won PGA and DGA awards after only being nominated for season 1, and it can still take home SAG and WGA trophies. Voters don’t seem to care where it competes; they love the show, and they’ll support it no matter what its label. It’s a little confusing that some groups do think it’s a comedy. The DGA Awards nominated it for a two-season comedy series, while the Music Supervisors Association and the British Society of Film Editors both nominated the first season for their comedy categories.
HBO has confirmed the series will be staged as a TV series At the Emmys — where the network will have three key nominations for Best Drama Series in “White Lotus,” “Succession” and “House of the Dragon” — and, it seems, voters are keen on either direction. Be open to black comedy/satire. (Plus, given their shared “Eat the Rich” theme, sharp wit, and HBO’s convincing campaign, having “White Lotus” compete with “Inheritance” should help win over any dubious voters.)
“The White Lotus” leaving Drama cleared the PGA’s “The Dropout” limited series category, which certainly made for a good night at Hulu headquarters. We’ll see if the critically acclaimed Elizabeth Holmes miniseries can wrap up its steady awards show Sunday night, when Amanda Seyfried hopes to reclaim her cape (second only to her Emmys). Add a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Elsewhere, “Weird: The Alyankovich Story” won a very messy TV-movie competition that included equally strong entries from “Fire Island” and “Prey,” but also nominated another The first ‘Pinocchio’ movie—the one on Disney+ that wasn’t directed by Guillermo del Toro Good night). “Stanley Tucci: Finding Italy” beat out “60 Minutes,” ESPN’s “30 on 30,” “George Carlin’s American Dream,” and Amy Poehler’s “Lu West and Desi” and other documentaries. “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls” topped game/contest competitions, while “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” kept winning wherever it went.
We’re still nearly four months away from figuring out what this all means for the Emmys, but a victory for the guild is a victory for the industry. They say at least one professional body supports the shows and accepts them for what they are. For “The Bear” and “The White Lotus,” the victory is a big step toward widespread acceptance — turning chaos into unity, and unity into conquest.
