World No. 9 Belinda Bencic beat World No. 14 Beatrice Haddad Maya in straight sets on Saturday to reach the final of the inaugural Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open .
At the International Tennis Center in Zayed Sports City, second seed and world No. 9 Belinda Bencic dominated Brazil’s Haddad Mahathir 6-2, 6-3. Ya.
The crowd inside the Stadium Court watched an entertaining game that saw Bencic at his best.
The 25-year-old Swiss dominated early on, taking a 3-2 lead in the first set, enough for her to take control and win her next three matches when sixth seed Haddad Maya was unable to find a comeback.
An early break in the second set allowed Bencic to take control of the tie, although Haddad Maia cut the deficit to 3-2.
Bencic, however, had other ideas and kept a clean sheet the rest of the way to seal the win in one hour and 32 minutes to reach Sunday’s final.
“It was a really good game, I was very prepared for this game, my shots were executed well, so I’m happy to win today,” Bencic said after the game.
“At the beginning of the tournament, the draw was really tough, so it’s nice to be in the final again and hopefully I can get a good result.”
Meanwhile, Xiuke Aoyama and Haoqing Chen will need to beat Zhang Shuai and Stephanie if they are to win Sunday’s doubles final.
Japan’s Aoyama and Chinese Taipei’s Jackie Chan beat America’s Desirae Krawczyk and Mexico’s Guiliana Olmos 6-4, 2-6, 10-3 in a three-set match that lasted nearly 90 minutes in the stadium’s opening match .
In the other semifinal, Stefani and Zhang had to overcome a tricky start against Miyu Kato and Monica Niculescu.
After taking a 7-5 advantage, Stephanie and Zhang looked comfortable on the court to seal the second set 6-3.
Sunday was the last day for fans to watch the pros play, and off the field, there was plenty of entertainment and activity for all.
