Buzzed Viking brings drinks, food and entertainment to Locust – The Stanly News & Press

[ad_1]

It only takes a second to realize that the new business has moved into the 5,000 square foot space that once housed Outfitters Steaks and Seafood in Locust, which will be a unique place as a giant airbrushed image depicts An evil Viking with a battle-axe greets visitors on the side of the building at 805 W. Main St.

People shouldn’t be intimidated – though they hope they’ll be hungry and thirsty. That’s because of business, Buzzing Viking Brewing Companywill feature a variety of beers and mead, an ancient alcoholic beverage made from fermented honey mixed with water.

Buzzed Viking opened its first store in Concord in the summer of 2020, and plans to open a Locust store sometime in late September or early October. This will be the city’s second brewery after The Brew Room, which opened in May.

Once Buzzed Viking opens later this year, an image of Vikings ready to fight will greet people.

After scouring various communities including Mooresville and Monroe for a second location, owners Jon Pokorny and Mike Moroe decided on Locust.

“We wanted to have something more local in a town that was still growing,” Pokorny said, adding that once he and Moroe came to Locust and talked to residents, “we realized, you know, this would be a great place.”

According to its website, Buzzed Viking is the first-ever brewery and distillery combination in Cabalus County and one of the few in the country.

Pokorny says the name, while fun, has nothing to do with overindulgence.

“I want people to bring their children and their families,” Pocconi said of the environment he wants to create.

Part of the name comes from the fact that mead is the oldest form of alcohol on the planet, and it was something the Vikings drank. Mead is made from honey made by bees. Another interpretation of the name centers on Moroe’s wife Sheri, who comes from a Norwegian family that dates back to the Vikings, Pokorny said. Her grandfather was a beekeeper, and whenever he was stung, he would say the bees were “buzzing” him.

Compared to Concord locations that offer basic pub food, Locust will offer a rich and varied menu of which about 90% is complete. Some of the products one can look forward to include Honey Chicken and Waffles, Wagyu, Elk and Wild Boar Burgers with Chili Bacon Jam, a sandwich called The Lonnie Little (Pokorny didn’t provide further details), giant turkey legs and honey pork schnitzel Served with sweet potato gnocchi. More traditional pub favourites include pretzels, honey chicken skin and locust hot fries.

“Basically, we see that you have Tailgators Sports Grill, you have fast food, you have Local Room, and we landed right in the middle,” Pokorny said, noting that the dishes won’t cost more than $15 or so.

Locust locations will offer about 20 types of beers brewed on-site and about 4 to 6 types of mead, which are quite different from traditional wines and tend to contain more alcohol. Buzzed Vikings Mead has an alcohol content of 12%.

Buzzed Viking at Concord offers about 70 flavors of mead, including blackberry, blueberry, apple, piña colada, mango and cheesecake. Pokorny said Locust customers can expect a similarly diverse offering.

In addition to food and drink, Buzzed Viking at Locust will be an entertainment venue. It will feature musical bingo, face painting, brewing bag games (combination of cornhole and beer pong), live music, comedy shows and more.

“We’re going to test a lot of things to see what our customers like,” he said.

The business is designed to please customers in four ways: “We want to give you a good product, we want to give you a place to play, we want to give you a good service, we just want you to have fun,” Bo Kony said.
