TORONTO (AP) — Gordon Lightfoot is the legendary Canadian folk songwriter whose hits include “Morning Rain” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.” , who died on Monday. A family member said he was 84 years old.

Rep. Lord Victoria said the musician died at a Toronto hospital. His cause of death was not immediately available.

The Orillia, Ontario native rose to prominence after moving to Toronto in the early 1960s, where he opened the doors to the thriving Yorkville music scene and met folk musicians Ian and Sylvia Tai Mori. They became admirers of his work and sang two tracks of his.

His 1965 debut, “Lightfoot!” ushered in a new folk sound, and by the turn of the decade, he had entered the pop scene effortlessly, with 1971’s “If You Can Read My Ideas” debuted on the Billboard charts.

Lightfoot’s popularity peaked in the mid-1970s, when both his single and album “Sundown” reached number one on the Billboard charts—the first and only time he did so.

But in the final decades of his career, despite various health challenges, he built a reputation as one of the stalwart road musicians, and his position on the charts didn’t slow him down.
