Abu Dhabi: CNN will go live Monday from its new state-of-the-art broadcast facility in Abu Dhabi, marking a new chapter in the network’s commitment to the Middle East.
Based in Abu Dhabi’s home of media, entertainment and gaming, twofour54’s Yas Creative Centre, the new CNN bureau expands the size and scope of its operations in the UAE. As one of the network’s major international production centers alongside Atlanta, New York, London and Hong Kong, it also marks the latest of several major investments by CNN in technology and editorial production.
Mike McCarthy, Executive Vice President and General Manager, CNN International, added: “CNN Abu Dhabi is an important part of our global newsgathering and programming operations. This new investment underscores that importance and we are delighted to share it with you. What will it bring to audiences around the world.”
The new multi-million dollar Abu Dhabi hub features the latest in broadcast technology. Its 80-square-meter studio will be the home of CNN’s international flagship current affairs program “Connecting the World with Becky Anderson,” featuring a 10-megapixel video wall and a suite of fully robotic cameras. The facility also houses four dedicated craft editing suites and utilizes hybrid digital and IP video/audio workflows for the highest quality, fully integrated productions.
Becky Anderson, anchor and editor-in-chief of CNN Abu Dhabi, said: “This new facility really enhances our presence in Abu Dhabi. Everything we build here enhances our storytelling about the region and others. Capabilities for District Stories, from state-of-the-art studios and production facilities, to the workspace itself, geared towards collaborative, multi-platform content creation. We are also excited to be part of the new creative community that is growing here at Yass Creative Centre.”
Abu Dhabi has been an important hub for CNN’s global operations since 2009, when the network first opened a bureau on twofour54’s former campus in the emirate. It has been the home of Connect the World with Becky Anderson since 2014 and is home to some of CNN’s most notable features, including Decoded and Marketplace Middle East, as well as major CNN digital properties such as the network’s concurrent In the Middle East newsletter .
It is also home to the CNN Abu Dhabi Academy, which recently welcomed its second cohort of fellows. In 2022, the center welcomes 88 budding journalists from 12 countries, providing them with a foundation in a range of newsgathering skills and principles, and challenging them to investigate and report fiction through hi Breaking News Stories – A tech newsroom simulation.
The new Abu Dhabi bureau is CNN’s latest new facility in recent years. The network began broadcasting in 2019 from a new studio in New York, followed by a high-tech facility in London in 2020, and will soon be broadcasting from a brand new studio in Atlanta.
