In 2021, Dubai Police announced the creation of the Middle East’s first female SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team. The team consists of 38 policewomen who received specialized training in close combat, marksmanship and tactics in preparation for the role.

The women-only SWAT team was created to promote gender equality and empower women to enforce the law. It also aims to improve the police’s ability to respond to threats to the safety of women, children and families.

women in law enforcement

In recent years, Dubai Police has been taking steps to increase women’s participation in law enforcement. In 2019, the police announced a target to increase the representation of women in the force to 20 per cent by 2030. The creation of the Women’s SWAT Team is a major milestone in this effort and is widely seen as a major step in promoting women in law enforcement in the region.

The female SWAT team in Dubai is a testament to the fact that women can serve in Special Operations and excel in these roles. It could also inspire other law enforcement agencies around the world to consider the benefits of recruiting and retaining more women in their ranks.

UAE SWAT Challenge 2023

The women’s SWAT team recently participated in the UAE SWAT Challenge 2023. The event brought together law enforcement agencies from the UAE and beyond to compete in tactical and shooting challenges.

The challenges in the UAE SWAT Challenge are designed to test the tactical skills and physical fitness of law enforcement officers in simulated real-life scenarios. These challenges can include hostage rescue, marksmanship, vehicle dismantling, and other high-pressure situations that require quick thinking, coordination, and teamwork.

Participation in the UAE SWAT Challenge requires extensive training and preparation, and teams must meet certain conditions and criteria to qualify for the competition. The event also provides an opportunity for law enforcement agencies to demonstrate their commitment to professionalism, innovation and excellence in law enforcement.

The Dubai Police women’s SWAT team competes with 54 national and international men’s SWAT teams and special forces. The performance of the team in various challenge projects is remarkable. They were ranked 12th out of 55 teams in Hostage Rescue, 10th out of 55 teams in Assault, 6th out of 55 teams in Officer Rescue and 55th in Tower Assault 21st and 32nd out of 55 teams in the steeplechase event. Their performance demonstrates the commitment, dedication and drive of women to participate and make a difference in the tactical world.

Overall, the performance of the Dubai Police Women’s SWAT Team in the UAE SWAT Challenge 2023 is a testament to their hard work, perseverance and skill. It sets a great example for women who aspire to pursue careers in the tactical field and challenge the gender stereotypes that often dominate these fields.
