Dubai-based Emirates wants to resume all 49 of its weekly flights to South Africa by May next year as demand for international travel recovers as coronavirus-related restrictions ease, an executive said on Tuesday. .
The airline announced additional flights in September, with three daily flights to and from Johannesburg from March 2023, two daily flights to Cape Town from February 2023, and two more flights to Durban , operating daily from December 2022.
Badr Abbas, Emirates senior vice president of commercial operations in Africa, said: “The re-opening of new flights between Dubai and Emirates’ three gateways in South Africa will increase our flight schedule to 42 per week. flights, whereas before the pandemic we had 49 flights a week,” he told reporters in Johannesburg.
“We hope that by May 2023, we will be able to resume all 49 flights based on market demand and our operational capacity.”
From an outbound perspective, the year-to-date market performance has exceeded Emirates’ expectations and is in line with the airline’s current capacity to and from South Africa.
He noted healthy movement to and from Europe, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent, as well as growing traffic to US destinations.
He said the consumer base has almost returned to pre-pandemic patterns, with most of the traffic being leisure and people visiting family and friends.
“However, businesses have been slower to recover; with the need to conduct business in person, and the restart of international conferences, we believe we will soon see a rebuilding of the sector,” Abbas added.
