Emirates News Agency – Khalifa University to host Siemens Energy’s Abu Dhabi Innovation Centre​​​

ABU DHABI, 1st November, 2022 (WAM) — Khalifa University of Technology has announced that it will host Siemens Energy’s Abu Dhabi Innovation Center at its Sas Al Nakhl campus.

The move will leverage the strengths of both parties to accelerate progress towards net zero through technology and research co-creation opportunities, knowledge transfer, local capacity development and employment opportunities.

During the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) 2022, Khalifa University and Siemens Energy signed a “cooperation agreement” for an innovation hub located on the university campus near the Maqta Bridge connecting Abu Dhabi Island Provides a dedicated location to the mainland.

The agreement was signed by Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, Executive Vice-Chancellor of Khalifa University, and Dr. Fahad Al Yafei, Chief Technology Officer, Siemens Energy Abu Dhabi Innovation Center.

The event was also attended by Professor Sir John O’Reilly, President of Khalifa University; Homaid Al Shimmari, Board Member of Khalifa University; Vinod Philip, Member of the Executive Board of Siemens Energy; Dietmar Siersdorfer, Managing Director of Siemens Energy Middle East and UAE.

Khalifa University offers world-class faculty and state-of-the-art research facilities, enabling innovation hubs to co-create decarbonization technology interventions, energy storage in areas such as Power-to-X, decarbonized thermal and industrial processes, condition-based services, and more and fuel cells, and blockchain for energy applications, etc.

Commenting on the agreement, Dr Al Hammadi said: “The hosting of the Siemens Energy Abu Dhabi Innovation Centre at our Sas Al Nakhl campus reflects the further strengthening of our long-standing traditional collaboration with Siemens Energy since 2011, particularly in innovation, research and academic aspects. We believe that the Abu Dhabi Innovation Centre will provide access to the infrastructure of Siemens Energy’s global technology centres and will also contribute to the UAE’s productive efforts in energy storage, fuel cells, blockchain and industrial processes, and human capital development paving the way for the outcome of the collaboration.”

For his part, Dr Alyafei commented: “To accelerate decarbonisation and achieve net-zero emissions faster, we need to leverage partnerships and innovation. Having this innovation hub on the Khalifa University campus will prove to be mutually beneficial. “In addition to helping to develop local capabilities, locating innovation on the Khalifa University campus will provide opportunities for collaborative research, internships and training, as well as guest lecturers with Siemens energy experts.”

The innovation hub will strengthen the specialized skills mix, creating 75 high-skilled jobs in Abu Dhabi by 2025. Siemens Energy will also provide Abu Dhabi University students with at least 6 internships each year, 50% of which will be Emiratis.

It will also act as an incubator for new technologies, bringing together customers, industrial partners, academia and research centers to accelerate the commercialization of innovative solutions driving the energy transition.
