Emirates News Agency – Khalifa Foundation, Microsoft announce winners of UAE Imagine Cup 2023 finals

ABU DHABI, 9th March, 2023 (WAM) — Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development and Microsoft have announced the winners of the UAE Imagine Cup 2023. The UAE winners were Wadima Alkaabi and Marwa Almazrouei for their ‘Piezoelectric Energy Model for Street Lamps’ project.

Winners will be mentored by Alia Al Mazrouei, CEO of the Khalifa Enterprise Development Fund. They will also continue to compete in global competitions, with grand prizes including a sit-down meeting with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and more than AED 360,000 (US$100,000) in cash prizes. The winning concept was chosen for its innovative method of using piezoelectric transducers to generate energy from cars at traffic lights, converting the energy into electricity.

In the UAE, the Imagine Cup is open to Emirati students aged 18 and over who are actively pursuing their education. Entries are accepted from teams of up to four who submit proposals in the Earth, Lifestyle, Education and Healthcare categories. Microsoft received 233 applications and narrowed them down to the top 6 teams for the UAE National Finals.

As the first-place UAE team, Streetlight Piezo Energy Models will be mentored by Alia Al Mazrouei and automatically qualify for the World Finals, where they will compete with 48 winning teams from around the world for the grand prize.
