Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, launched year-round flights to the Portuguese capital Lisbon yesterday (June 18), with three flights every Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday from its operations hub Abu Dhabi.
The Abu Dhabi-Lisbon route will be served by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, offering 28 Business Class seats and 262 Economy Class seats, an entertainment system, in-seat power and onboard Wi-Fi connectivity.
The inaugural flight, EY63, took off from Abu Dhabi Airport in the presence of Fernando d’Orey de Brito e Cunha Figueirinhas, Portugal’s Ambassador to the UAE, and Chris Hedlin, Etihad’s Vice President Network Planning.
To celebrate the inaugural flight, guests on board were given a special menu, including the traditional Portuguese delicacy egg tart.
All Business Class passengers receive gifts including luxury chocolates from Emirati brand Mirzam, and a unique commemorative luggage tag for Economy Class passengers.
The pilot celebrated the occasion by waving Emirati and Portuguese flags in the cockpit when it landed in Lisbon for the first time on Sunday.
Lisbon, the second oldest capital city in Europe, offers visitors a rich history, picturesque beaches, stunning architecture and a vibrant nightlife.
Antonoaldo Neves, Chief Executive Officer, said: “As we continue to expand our global network, we are delighted to be flying to Lisbon for the first time. We look forward to welcoming guests to the historic city of Lisbon, while also connecting the Portuguese people with the UAE. and destinations in the Middle East, Asia and Australia.”
Initially announced as a seasonal route due to strong travel demand, Etihad has now extended the service into winter, making it a year-round operation.
Lisbon was recently voted “Leading City Break Destination” and “Leading Beachside Metropolitan Destination” at the European edition of the World Travel Awards 2022, proving its appeal to holidaymakers.
The inaugural flight to Lisbon coincides with the launch of Etihad Airways’ summer flights to the Greek island of Mykonos and Malaga on June 16 and June 18 respectively. Passengers on the inaugural flight to each destination were given commemorative gifts from Etihad Airways to mark the occasion.-TradeArabia News Service
