Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden Confirmed Launch Date Exhibition: Finding the Next Great Artista documentary series about making art in partnership with MTV Entertainment Studios and PB&J TV + Docs. Exhibition: Finding the Next Great Artist Premieres Friday, March 3 at 9 p.m. ET on MTV RuPaul’s Drag Race; The Smithsonian Channel will air a rerun on Tuesday, March 7 at 9 p.m. ET. The series will use #TheExhibit.
The non-fiction program profiles seven rising American artists, selected after a national search in consultation with Hirshhorn curators. Over the course of the series, a diverse team: Jamaal Barber (Atlanta), Frank Buffalo Hyde (Northfield, Minnesota), Misha Kahn (Brooklyn, New York), Clare Kambhu (Queens, New York), Baseera Khan (Brook, New York Lin) York), Jillian Mayer (Miami) and Jennifer Warren (Chicago) were inspired by social themes reflected in the collections of modern and contemporary artists, including Laurie Anderson, Mark Bradford, the Guerilla Girls, Barbara Kruger, Yayoi Kusama, Kent Monkman, Nam June Paik, Horace Pippin and Alma Thomas.
“Exhibition: Finding the Next Great Artist exemplifies the radical accessibility of modern and contemporary art at the Hirshhorn Museum,” said Museum Director Melissa Chiu. “The Hirshhorn is free to all, yet many cannot travel to Washington, DC. This series will introduce audiences to art-making no matter where they are located, highlight the importance of artists in society, and inspire Hirshhorn’s mission of art for all. ”
As lead judge, Chiu consults with a rotating panel of art world experts to assess the originality and execution of an artist’s work to determine the most successful responses. The series culminates when an artist receives an invitation to exhibit original work at the Hirshhorn and receives a cash prize from the network. Judges included artists Adam Pendleton and Abigail DeVille, critic Kenny Schachter, sociologist Sarah Thornton, arts educator Sammy Hoi, arts digital strategist JiaJia Fei and Hirshhorn trustee and art collector Keith Rivers. The series is hosted by MTV News’ Dometi Pongo.

The Hirshhorn Museum’s permanent collection includes major artists from the late 19th century to the present, including paintings, sculpture, photographs, mixed-media installations, works on paper, and new media. The Hirshhorn has one of the most comprehensive collections of modern sculpture in the world, with many examples to be seen indoors and in the sculpture garden.

Through ongoing investigations of self and identity, Jamaal Barber (b. 1980; Richmond, VA) is an artist, printmaker, and educator whose mixed-media practice examines the overlap of social issues, culture, and identity with Blackness The way. His work has been exhibited at Norfolk State University, Norfolk, VA; Samford University, Birmingham, AL; Blue Spiral Gallery, Asheville, NC; Young Harris College, Young GA Harris; Mint Galleries, Atlanta; Steffen Thomas Museum, Madison, Georgia; and Center for Contemporary Printmaking, Norwalk, Connecticut. He received his MFA in Printmaking from Georgia State University in 2021, where he completed an MFA thesis exhibition titled “Fullness.” He is currently a visiting lecturer at the Ernest G. Welch College of Art and Design in Atlanta.
Frank Buffalo Hyde (b. 1974; Santa Fe, New Mexico) is an Onondaga/Nemiip (Nez Perce) artist whose paintings are His pop sensibilities and uncompromising irony examine and elevate images of contemporary Aboriginal life. His work has been exhibited in museums including the Wheelett Museum of the American Indian in Santa Fe; the CM Russell Museum in Great Rapids, Montana; and the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His work is in the public collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC; the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA; the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY; the Iroquois People Museum, Cobleskill, New York; Colgate University Longyearbyen Museum, Hamilton, New York; and Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe. Hyde lives and works in Northfield, Minnesota.
Misha Kahn (b. 1989; Duluth, MN) is a New York-based artist and designer who works at the intersection of design and sculpture to produce whimsical and playful objects from a variety of materials and a range of processes and famous. He has exhibited at Villa Kathack, Munich (2022); Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Art and Design, New York City; Pizzuti Collection, Columbus, Ohio; Design Museum. Baseera Khan (b. 1980; Denton, Texas) is a New York-based performance, sculpture, and installation artist whose work explores materials and their economies, and the impact of these relationships on labor, family structure, and religious and spiritual well-being Impact. They have a solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York in 2021-22; other institutional exhibitions include the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio; New Orleans Museum of Art, Louisiana; Sculpture Center, Queens, New York; and Aspen, Colorado Peng’s Aspen Art Museum. She has received fellowships from Apexart, New York City, and the Bronx Museum. Kambhu has a BA in Studio Art, an MA in Art Education from New York University, and an MFA from the Yale School of Art.
Jillian Mayer (b. 1984; Miami) is a Miami-based artist whose work involves video, sculpture, photography, performance, web-based experiences, and installations, whose practice explores the intersection of technology and human existence, particularly how people participate The digital landscape has reshaped their physical experience. Her art has been featured in exhibitions at international institutions, including Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Omaha, Nebraska; Perez Museum of Art, Miami; MoMA PS1, Queens, New York; Ohu, Denmark Kunstmuseum; and Kunstmuseum Leipzig, Germany, and screened at Sundance, Rotterdam, New York, and South by Southwest. Her work is included in the collections of the Perez Art Museum in Miami and the Patricia and Philip Frost Museum of Art, among others. Mayer holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Florida International University in Miami.
Jennifer Warren (b. 1988; Cleveland) is a Chicago-based oil painter whose work explores themes of nature, beauty, and the black body. Largely self-taught, her practice reflects her passion for incorporating new ideas and techniques aimed at communicating the Black lived experience through everyday moments of intimacy and meditation. Warren’s work has been exhibited at the Martin Gallery in Chicago; the Sidney Larson Gallery in Columbia, Missouri; and in the Saatchi Art Virtual Exhibition. She is a graduate of Eckerd College with a BA in International Business, a minor in Visual Arts, and took drawing courses at the Leo Marchutz School of Painting in France. She lives and works in Chicago.
