The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), a prestigious Indian institution, is expected to open its first overseas campus in Abu Dhabi next year. This was confirmed by India’s ambassador to the UAE, Sunjay Sudhir, who said it would be a “big move”.
“We expect the meeting to start next year,” he said. He also confirmed that finer details are still being finalized.
“Currently, ADEK and IIT Delhi are discussing specific issues such as where to set it up, syllabus, student body and business model.”
According to Sudhir, the college will provide future students with a high level of education. “Details about the teachers are still being discussed,” he said. “But the quality of education will be very high. The quality that IITs are known for.”
In November, a senior IIT Delhi team concluded a visit to the UAE capital and held extensive discussions with Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) officials and other stakeholders in the UAE.
Currently, there are 23 IITs in India, located in various regions of the country, offering undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programs. The school is considered one of the best engineering schools in the world, with notable alumni including Alphabet Inc. CEO Sunder Pichai and Indian industrialist NR Narayana Murthy.
