Indo-Canadian Sachit Mehra has been elected the new President of the Liberal Party of Canada.

The ruling party is headed by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, while the president is in charge of organizing events, including boosting membership, fundraising and building party structures across the country.

Mehra was declared elected at the end of the party’s three-day convention in Ottawa on Saturday. He defeated the party’s vice president Mehra Ahmed and will replace Suzanne Cowan.

After announcing the election results, Mehra tweeted: “This National Liberal Convention is an amazing moment as a party and as a team. I am honored to be your President.”

Mehra is from Winnipeg, Manitoba. He put down roots in New Delhi since his father moved from the Indian capital to study in Canada in the 1960s.

Mehra announced his intention to run for party office last October, touting his experience as chairman of the Federal Liberal Party of Canada, the Liberal Party of Canada (Manitoba) and the Young Liberals. Canada.
