Israel issued a warning of a prolonged, but ultimately victorious, conflict against Hamas, while US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited for the second time to pledge full support following a major attack.
Israel is preparing a ground invasion of Gaza, controlled by Hamas, after an attack on October 7. Both sides have suffered civilian casualties due to ongoing bombardments.
Blinken’s rapid visit showed solidarity with Israel before his tour of six Arab countries. The trip coincided with President Joe Biden considering an invitation to visit Israel, signaling strong support after the worst attack in Israel’s 75-year history.
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant highlighted the robust US support through visits by Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, as well as the deployment of two US aircraft carriers to the Mediterranean.
Gallant emphasized a commitment to a lengthy battle, and Blinken assured Israel of ongoing US support.
During his visit, Blinken met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog. He was also scheduled to meet with Israel’s main opposition leader, Yair Lapid.
