Italian and UAE energy companies discuss partnership at COP28

The Italian Embassy in Abu Dhabi held a seminar entitled “Italy and the UAE towards COP28 – Private Sector Engagement in the Energy Transition”, with the aim of identifying new opportunities for cooperation and solutions to address the energy transition.

The workshop is in line with the declaration signed by Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Taggiani and Minister of Industry and Advanced Technologies and President-elect Dr. Sultan Al-Jaber on the strengthening of cooperation between Italy and the UAE at COP28. Italian companies known for their clean energy technology solutions are willing to contribute to the energy transition and make COP28 a successful event.

Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani commented at the seminar that the event, organized by the Abu Dhabi embassy in partnership with Il Sole 24 Ore, was an immediate follow-up to the statement. Tajani further emphasized that the green transition offers great opportunities, with Italian companies in the sector ready to collaborate with those in the UAE to develop mutually beneficial projects.

The seminar was welcomed by Lorenzo Fanara, Italian Ambassador to the UAE, and Mirja Cartia d’Asero, CEO of Gruppo Sole 24 Ore. Italy and the UAE already have a strong energy partnership, but both intend to pursue significant growth profits.

Ambassador Fanala stressed the importance of collaboration between all stakeholders, including the private sector and public opinion, noting that “we need the contribution of all” to successfully address the energy transition challenge. He also commended the UAE’s commitment to inclusivity at COP28, involving youth and the private sector.

In the first panel discussion, entitled “The Road to COP28: Building Partnerships for Climate Action,” experts including Umberto Tavolato, Director of International Relations at the Med-Or Foundation, and Niccolò Heilpern, Regional Vice President of MAIRE, discussed strategic partnerships between the two countries. between. Heilpern shared how Italian expertise can be exported to help the UAE develop an industrial-scale circular economy, using the example of a polymer upcycling plant in the Kezad Industrial Zone in Abu Dhabi.

He also mentioned other initiatives such as the construction of a low-carbon ammonia plant in the TA’ZIZ industrial zone.

During the second panel discussion, moderated by Laura La Posta, Executive Editorial Director, Special Projects, Il Sole 24 Ore, Zouheir Sabra, Chief Financial and Investment Officer, BEEAH Group; Daniela Gentile, CEO, Ansaldo Green Tech; Alessandro Motta, Head of Public Affairs, SAIPEM; Global Giovanni Chianetta, CEO, Solar Council; Andrea Lovato, Senior Vice President and Global Head, Hydrogen, ACWA Power; and Pietro Calugi, General Manager, Intesa Sanpaolo Abu Dhabi, IMI Corporate and Investment Banking, discuss the business of green transition between Italy and the UAE case.

Sabra highlighted the importance of recycling to achieve a zero-waste future and promote a circular economy.

Gentile explained the need for energy storage systems to make renewable energy available and discussed the various energy storage technologies and electrolysis technologies used by Ansaldo Green Tech for hydrogen production.

Motta discussed Saipem’s cooperation with UAE companies in various large-scale engineering and construction projects, and proposed solutions for reducing the carbon footprint of the plant’s construction and operation phases using innovative technologies.
