amman — Jordan, Israel and the United Arab Emirates will meet on Monday 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) In Sharm el-Sheikh, accelerated implementation of a project agreed a year ago required the exchange of water for electricity, Israeli business website Globes reported.
The MoU will be signed by Mohammad Al Najjar, Minister of Water and Irrigation, who signed the agreement a year ago, Mariam Almheiri, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, and Issawi Frej, Israel’s Minister of Regional Cooperation, Globes reported.
According to the Israeli website, under the memorandum of understanding, the two parties will work to expedite the various phases of the project, which includes the construction of a huge solar farm in the Jordanian desert and the construction of a desalination plant on Israel’s northern coast. The parties pledged to report on progress at a meeting in the UAE within a year.
According to Globes, the MoU will serve as a statement of intent by the UAE and Jordan to confirm the continuation of the trilateral project to the new Israeli government. Globes said the memorandum of understanding is not binding on incoming Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government, but Netanyahu is expected to abide by the agreement.
According to Globes, Egypt, which is about to sign the deal, is also involved and believes the deal opens up the possibility of a similar deal.
Jordan News contacted Omar Salame, a spokesman for the Ministry of Water Resources, who would neither confirm nor deny the Israeli report. However, he said Najjar was in Sharm El Sheikh.
Government Communications Minister Faisal Schbul did not return calls to Jordan News.
