Ukraine’s air force spokesman Yuri Ignat said on television that Russia launched “six missiles and five attack drones”.

“Unfortunately, not all aircraft were destroyed. Of the six aircraft, four were destroyed by air defense systems and two hit the combat airfield near Kropyvnytskyi,” he said, without giving further details.

Kropyvnytskyi is a small city in the Kirovgrad region of central Ukraine, south of the capital Kiev.

The attack came as Russia stepped up airstrikes in Ukraine, with the capital Kiev under attack for several days this week.

The conflict, which has been going on for more than 15 months, has escalated as Kiev said it was preparing a massive counteroffensive.

Russian border villages have also been heavily shelled this week.
