Brandon King’s MAIDEN century gave the West Indies a seven-wicket win against the United Arab Emirates in their first one-day international (ODI) at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday.

It was West Indies’ first match under new white-ball coach Darren Sammy, who was appointed on May 12.

Bowling first, the UAE could only manage 202 for 47.1 overs.

Batting at the seven, Ali Nasser hit 58 off 52 balls, hitting five fours and two sixes.

Vriitya Aravind also showed some quality, hitting 40 in 77 deliveries.

Mid-speed Keemo Paul was the main breaker, scoring 3/34 in 7.1. Pacers Dominic Drakes (2/29 with nine turnovers) and Alden Smith (2/40 with eight turnovers) were also involved.

Spinners also proved to be in the minority for UAE batsmen, with leg Yannic Cariah 2/26 in seven overs and spinner Roston Chase 1/39 in 10 overs.

In response, Windies openers Johnson Charles and King scored 48 for the first wicket in nine overs. King and Shamal Brooks added 91 for the second wicket after Charles lost 24 to put West Indies in winning position.

With 139 points, Brooks was sent off for 44 of 58 balls. With the addition of Keacy Carty, King continued his great form and improved his century.

King landed 112 off 112 balls (12 fours, four sixes) and the victory was in sight. Captain Shai Hope and Carty saw an area side crossing.

Hopes ended with 13 not out, with Katie unbeaten in seven matches as West Indies slipped to 206/3 with 35.2 overs.

Game 2 of the series kicks off at 8.30am on Tuesday morning.

West Indies are using the series against the UAE to prepare for their World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe later this month.

Summary score:

United Arab Emirates 202 (47.1 rounds) (Ali Naseer 58, Vriitya Aravind 40; Keemo Paul 3/34, Yannic Cariah 2/26, Dominic Drakes 2/29, Odean Smith 2/40) vs West Indies 206/3 (35.2 Round)) (Brandon King 112, Shamarh Brooks 44) West Indies won by seven wickets.
