Here are some basic social media guidelines to consider in the country

When using social media platforms in the UAE, individuals must comply with regulations and guidelines set by local authorities and as outlined in the UAE Cybercrime Law.

While the UAE offers favorable opportunities to leverage social media, it is crucial to fulfill responsibilities. Here are some basic social media guidelines to consider in the UAE:

Individuals must refrain from posting online that defames or attacks Islam or any other recognized religion. Under Article 37 of the UAE Cybercrime Law, such offenses can be punished with up to seven years in prison and fines ranging from AED 250,000 to AED 1 million.

Avoid sharing any content that causes harm to women and children, including but not limited to human trafficking, pornography, prostitution, and acts that violate public morals. According to Articles 32 to 34 of the UAE Cybercrime Law, such crimes can result in a prison term of 1 to 5 years and a fine of AED 250,000 to AED 1 million.

Users may not post any content that is against the government or government departments, ruling regimes, symbols, political systems of the UAE or any other country. Such crimes are considered very serious under Articles 20 to 28 of the UAE Cybercrime Law.

In addition, insulting UAE public sector employees via social media is also considered a crime.

Avoiding mentioning individuals, sharing visual content without permission, making threats, spreading inaccurate information from authoritative sources, and engaging in gossip or slander are all considered illegal.

Under Article 44 of the UAE Cybercrime Law, violating another’s privacy by posting photos, videos or comments can be punished with a minimum of six months in prison and a fine ranging from AED 150,000 to AED 500,000.

To become a social media influencer and endorse paid advertising, it is recommended to obtain a license from the UAE National Media Council or the appropriate regulatory body.
