A new search for missing Madeleine McCann began this week in Portugal, 16 years after the British girl disappeared while on a family holiday in the parish of Praia da Luz

A statement from the police judiciary said It is coordinating searches in the Algarve at the request of German police And in front of British officers.
A statement issued today by the Braunschweig state prosecutor’s office said: “As part of the investigation into the case of Madeleine McCann, measures are currently being taken in Portugal related to criminal proceedings.
“These measures are being implemented … by Portuguese law enforcement authorities with the support of Portuguese officials [German] Federal Criminal Police Office.
“Further information on background will not be released at this time.”
Germany’s state prosecutor reportedly said this morning that the latest search came at the request of German officials as part of their investigation into Madeleine McCann’s disappearance.
It is understood Portuguese police are assisting in the search due to laws restricting German police from operating abroad and British officials were also present.
An area near the Barragem do Arade reservoir, about 50 kilometers from Praia da Luz where Madeleine disappeared in 2007, was cordoned off pending a search, Portuguese news website SIC reported.
The steel ring meant reporters and curious onlookers were more than a mile away from the two white tents.
It said the prime suspect in her disappearance, Convicted sex offender Christian BrucknerStayed in the region between 2000 and 2017.
Investigators believe the 45-year-old killed Madeleine, then three, after abducting her from a vacation apartment.
In June 2020, Portuguese officials identified Bruckner as a suspect, and Bruckner denied any involvement in the young man’s disappearance.
He faces charges in Germany over a number of separate sex crimes he allegedly committed in Portugal during that time.
Images emerged on Monday of Portuguese officials walking along a dry path near the reservoir and cordoning off the area with police tape.
This is not the first time the reservoir has been searched.
In 2008, Portuguese lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia paid Professional divers inspecting the channel After he claimed to have learned from criminals that Madeleine’s body was in the reservoir.
The most recent Portuguese search linked to her disappearance was in 2014, when British police were allowed to examine bush near where she disappeared.
Earlier this month, Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry release brief statement Commemorating the one-year anniversary of her disappearance on their Find Madeleine Campaign website.
They said: “Today marks the 16th anniversary of Madeleine’s abduction.
“Still missing…still very much missed.
“It’s hard to find the right words to express how we feel.
“The police investigation continues and we await a breakthrough.”
Kate and Gerry, both doctors, met in Glasgow in 1993. They now live in Rosley, Leicestershire, with their twins Sean and Emily.
Kate is a GP who studied at the University of Dundee and Gerry is a cardiologist and is now a Research Professor at the University of Leicester.
After Madeleine disappeared, Kate quit her job to work for a children’s charity.
The couple married in 1998 and Madeleine was their first child, born five years later in 2003.
