CEBU CITY, Philippines – Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles big man Jelo Mar Rota gets a very rare opportunity to represent the Philippines at the 13th Annual Basketball Without Borders (BWB) of the National Basketball Association The Asian Training Camp (NBA) will be held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates later this year.

A native of Bantayan Island, Rota played forward and center for the Magis Eagles and was one of only two Filipino basketball players selected to join the prestigious basketball camp.

Another Filipino is Andy Gemao of Letran University Squires.

They were part of the top 80 high school basketball rookies selected by the camp in Asia and the Middle East.

Launched in 2021, the NBA BWB is also FIBA’s outreach program for global basketball development and communities outside the United States,

During the training camp, Rota and Gemao will participate in top coaching and skill development programs no less than NBA, WNBA and FIBA ​​coaches.

Rota is not the first Cebuano language chosen by BWB. It will be recalled that his teammate and current UP Fighting Maroons Jared Bahay participated in the 2022 BWB training camp.

Besides Rota, another Cebu native was also selected by the NBA to participate in one of the international training camps.

Henry Kristoffer Suico, also from SHS-AdC Magis Eagles, was invited to the NBA Academy Asia Development Camp in Singapore last month.

It’s best remembered that Rota was one of the key players in winning the SHS-AdC Magis Eagles Cebu Schools Sports Foundation (Cesafi) High School Championship last year against the Bogo City Academy of Sciences and Arts (CBSAA) Trail Blazers.

He was eventually named one of the league’s “Mythical Five.”

He also played for the Magis Eagles at the National Basketball Training Camp (NBTC) National Finals in Manila last March.

For Rommel Rasmo, multi-time head coach of the SHS-AdC Magis Eagles, he is very proud of Rota’s achievements.

“I am very proud that Jelo has been included in the NBA BWB program. He deserves to be invited and it is a testament to his talent and hard work.
