recommended FEI Group 7 Committee With the help of the UAE Equestrian and Horse Racing Federation’s Dressage Division, the UAE hosted a national judge maintenance course in Abu Dhabi led by FEI 5* Dressage Judge Irina Maknami from Russia.

More than 40 participants attended the course, joined by many GCC countries such as Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar, while others participated via zoom. On its social media pages, the UAE ERF even reported that no fewer than 300 judges were involved.

Consisting of two days, the two-day course covers general principles of dressage, dressage moves from beginner to minor tour level, a basic misjudgment guide to dressage moves, and shadow judgment and review. The judging session is held in conjunction with the UAE National Dressage Championships.

Irina Maknami has been an FEI 5* dressage judge since 2017, having started her judging career as far back as 2009 in Moscow. After becoming a successful National Grand Prix judge, she passed the FEI 3* dressage judge exam. In 2013 she became a 4* judge as well as a judge in the pony category. She has hosted the European Dressage Championships, two World Cup Finals, two European Under-25 Championships, the World Young Horse Breeding Championships and more.

“I am delighted to see the National Equestrian Federation taking the initiative to organize the clinic. Many thanks to the UAE Equestrian Federation for not only organizing the clinic but also inviting people from the other 7 groups of countries. This is an important step in creating a dressage community, knowledge exchange and collaboration ,” said Diana al Shaer, Chairman of FEI Group 7.

“It was an informative, valuable and interesting course. Irina made me look at what we did differently. She also advocated positive judgment and working together to make the sport more inclusive I think it will forever change the way I think about what I do while riding,” said Mohamed Al Serkal, a member of the FEI Group 7 committee who attended the course.
