Meet the Dubai fashion designer at the helm of Emilia Ohrtmann

[ad_1]

Emilia Altman is a German designer and entrepreneur. Her passion for fashion and styling started at an early age, but she was discouraged from studying fashion design without an innate talent for drawing.

“I was told that I would never be able to make money from fashion design, so I should look into something that would open doors,” she told Euronews.

So Emilia switched to studying Business Studies, but her passion for designing clothes was rekindled when she started working as a buyer for a major sportswear company.

“I took classes in the evenings and weekends and finally learned to draw,” she said. Later, she met another designer and started sewing and selling children’s clothing.

Emilia later moved to Dubai where she was approached and offered many different business opportunities but initially found them difficult to accept as she wanted to spend more time with her three young children.

“I had to find a way to juggle being a mother and working,” she said. Luckily, she met many other women in Dubai who wanted to start their own businesses, so she spent the next six years helping them design their websites and mentoring them through their entrepreneurial stages.

“Then COVID came and I started writing a book for my kids. I wanted to give them something they could read in case I wasn’t around.”

In her book This Is Your Life: How to Choose Confidence, Emilia writes and tells her children to follow their dreams, follow their passions, and not listen to outside voices.

“That’s when I realized I always knew what I wanted to do and I didn’t do it,” she said, and decided to start her own business fashion line.

“I want to give confidence to women,” Emilia told Euronews.

From the sustainable fabrics she uses to the minimalist designs she creates, her goal is to help women feel more confident.

“When you feel more confident, you can follow your passions and achieve big dreams and goals you may have been putting off,” she says.

Emilia says she is now looking forward to taking further steps towards realizing her dream by expanding the business from her new home in Dubai to the wider region.
