Meet the helm of Dubai fashion designer Emilia Ohrtmann’s brand

Emilia Altman German designer and entrepreneur. Her passion for fashion and styling started at an early age, but she was reluctant to study fashion design as she did not have a natural talent for drawing.

“I’ve been told that I’ll never be able to make money from fashion design, so I should look into something that opens doors,” she told Euronews.

As a result, Emilia turned to business research, but her passion for designing clothes was rekindled when she started working as a buyer for a major sportswear company.

“I took classes in the evenings and weekends and finally learned to draw,” she said. After that, she met another designer and started sewing and selling children’s clothing.

Emilia later moved to Dubai, where she was found and offered many different business opportunities, but initially found it difficult to accept them as she wanted to spend more time with her three young children.

“I had to figure out a way to juggle both, being a mom and working,” she said. Luckily, she met many women in Dubai who wanted to start a business, so she spent the next six years helping them design their websites and mentoring them through their entrepreneurial stages.

“Then COVID came and I started writing a book for my kids. I wanted to give them something they could read in case I wasn’t around.”

In her book This Is Your Life: How to Choose Confidence, Emilia writes and tells her children to follow their dreams and their passions rather than listen to outside voices.

“That’s when I realized that I always knew what I wanted to do, but I didn’t do it,” she said, and decided to start her own business fashion line.

“I want to give women confidence,” Emilia told Euronews.

From the sustainable fabrics she uses to the minimalist designs she creates, her goal is to help women feel more confident.

“When you feel more confident, you can follow your passions and achieve big dreams and goals that you may have been putting off,” she says.

Emilia said she is now looking forward to fulfilling her dream by expanding the business from her new home in Dubai to the wider area.
