“My ambition is to unite the world through the eyes of these children and make today’s culture understand that in order to sustain our society, we must protect and nurture our children, the children within us all. Love these children is ours Responsibility, let them bring love back into the world, let us open our eyes to the wonders of childhood.” — Mackenzie Thorpe

Born in 1956, Mackenzie Thorpe grew up in the industrial town of Middlesbrough in the 1950s, where his father worked and his mother was an auxiliary nurse. Life for the Thorpe family was no different from that of most of their community — a struggle at times. MacKenzie admits to having mixed emotions during this period of his life. He remembers a strong community spirit, warmth and humor that thrived in adversity, and loneliness and isolation.

The necessity and compulsion to paint was evident from an early age and is still present in Mackenzie today. As a child, he would hunt for any raw material he could find, drawing on a cigarette case with the tip of a pencil, or using eyeshadow and lipstick stolen from his mother’s makeup bag. Mackenzie struggled with dyslexia as a child, and he was confident in drawing. Unsurprisingly, he left school without a formal qualification to pursue a variety of manual, non-technical jobs while continuing to paint.

McKenzie eventually mustered the courage to enter the local art academy. His lack of education and barely readable application was not supported, but the strength and workload shown by MacKenzie, combined with his passion and commitment, earned him a place at the Middlesbrough School of Art, and subsequently, more than Yamshaw School of Art, London.

After leaving art school, he spent a few years working with children in the city centre in London before moving to North Yorkshire to set up a studio and his own gallery with his wife Susan and children Owen and Chloe. Since then, he has become one of the most collected and sought after artists in the world. His work expresses the full spectrum of human emotion, from the special bonds of love and friendship to the importance of self-reflection and personal triumph. His work is a tribute to the creativity within us all, a living expression of hope and the human spirit.

McKenzie’s view of life is clear. He doesn’t hide the fact that life is often a struggle, a seemingly endless dark tunnel. However, he firmly believes that our fragile dreams are worth nurturing and that love and honesty will triumph over adversity.

Mackenzie Thorpe is one of the best-selling British artists of the past 30 years. His work is rooted in truth, embodied in emotional expression and always has a message of hope.his The journey took him from the shipyards in Middlesbrough to an internationally acclaimed artist whose atmospheric and poignant paintings were inspired by his working-class roots in the north of England.

Love and hope are key symbols in MacKenzie’s art, both in the nostalgic pride of his industrial heritage and in the dreamy skies and landscapes.

Celebrating his 30th anniversary in 2019, Mackenzie continues to pave the way for artists who follow in his footsteps. He will mark the year with a major retrospective, connecting with his community of collectors and learning about their personal connection to his work.

Mackenzie regularly supports local and national charities with his art. All of his charitable work is related to important issues depicted in his art, such as disadvantaged children, loneliness and hope.
