Planet Partners with UAE Space Agency to Build Satellite Data-Driven Damage Atlas of Loss + Climate Resilience – SatNews

[ad_1]

Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL ) recently communicated with United Arab Emirates (UAE) Space Agency Building a regional, satellite-data-driven atlas of loss and damage to improve resilience to climate change.

The program aims to provide data to selected countries with high climate risk to help build resilience, make informed policy decisions, and stimulate fiscal planning for climate adaptation and mitigation.

The data facility program initially focuses on compiling data for selected climate-vulnerable countries to quantify losses from extreme weather events such as floods and droughts, and to help build early warning systems. With access to high-frequency, high-resolution satellite data and analytical tools, the goal is to make these foundational data sets available to governments, NGOs, and and tangible assets.

Planet will provide key data assets and functionality to the atlas, including:

  • Visit PlanetScope Demonstrate satellite data for countries to take advantage of near-daily scans of country-level imagery at a resolution of 3 meters and observe gradual changes such as coastal erosion.
  • SkySat mission capabilityIdentify specific areas of interest at 50 cm resolution and capture fine details of rapidly changing events, such as the immediate impact of flood damage.
  • Road use and building change detection Analyze feeds to receive AI-enhanced insights on rapid urban growth in regions at risk to climate.
  • Get Soil Moisture Content Planetary Variable A data feed that monitors near-daily changes in soil moisture in areas such as drought-threatened croplands at a rate of 100 meters per pixel.
  • Insights from planetary variables in surface temperature Data feeds to elucidate temperature fluctuations over time, such as rising urban and rural heat due to climate change.

Together with partners, provide technical training and engage with end-user organizations to ensure data is used effectively through webinars, on-site training and collaborations with local universities and academic partners.

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges our planet has ever faced, and it is critical that fragile states have real, tangible insights to build resilience. Satellite data can help capture these insights and help create climate risk early warning systems, but we cannot do it alone. We are proud to partner with the UAE Space Agency to put this data into the hands of key players

This project is an act of data diplomacy from the UAE to a country at disproportionate risk from climate change, and helping it access digital tools and resources to manage a sustainable and secure future is critical. The UAE government has made sustainability and protecting the environment a top priority, as evidenced by the nationwide launch of the UAE 2050 Net Zero Emissions Strategic Plan.In line with this direction, the UAE Space Agency has launched a number of initiatives and projects to ensure we do our part to further our global sustainability journey and support climate change initiatives
