Pope urges swift action on global warming at UN

Pope Francis has called on world leaders to commit to binding climate targets to combat global warming, warning of irreversible damage to both people and the planet. In an updated version of his 2015 encyclical on the environment, the Pope emphasized the urgent need for action, especially to protect the most vulnerable.

He urged a transition from fossil fuels to clean energy with efficient, obligatory, and monitored measures. The updated encyclical, “Praise God,” aims to inspire negotiators at the next UN climate talks in Dubai.

Pope Francis criticized climate change skeptics and stressed the moral imperative of addressing the issue. He acknowledged the damage already done to biodiversity and species loss and the potential for irreversible harm.

The document adopts a sharp, scientific tone and serves as a call to action for world leaders ahead of the upcoming UN climate talks.
