Dubai’s Pedestrian Bridges Get Smart New Lighting Upgrade
Walking across a bridge in Dubai after dark is about to get a lot brighter. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has kicked off a project to upgrade Dubai pedestrian bridges lighting at 30 key locations across the city.
The plan involves fitting each bridge with modern, energy-efficient LED lights that use motion-sensor technology. That means the lights switch on automatically when someone walks onto the bridge, saving energy while still keeping the path well lit and safe.
RTA says the first phase covers 21 bridges, with the full rollout across all 30 locations expected to wrap up by the end of this year. Before starting work, teams used light meters to study existing conditions at each bridge and figure out exactly what upgrades were needed.
The project is part of RTA’s wider People Happiness initiative, aimed at making everyday journeys around Dubai safer and more comfortable. It also ties into the emirate’s sustainability goals, cutting down on unnecessary energy use while keeping pedestrians visible and secure during evening hours.
For residents who walk regularly, especially in the cooler evening hours, this upgrade should make crossing busy roads feel a lot safer.
