Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that it has replaced 14,400 traditional lighting fixtures with modern eco-friendly LED lights, a major upgrade that also involved the refurbishment of 39 tunnels and intersections totaling 22.6 kilometers.

In addition to promoting a clean environment, the RTA said it is also committed to energy conservation, strengthening Dubai and the UAE’s position in the green economy and sustainable development.

In doing so, RTA is committed to implementing best international practices to achieve financial sustainability by optimizing utilization and extending the useful life of its assets.

The project required the redesign of tunnel lighting installations and the operating system of road intersections at night, and the use of sustainable, environmentally friendly lighting.

Regarding the upgrade work, Maitha bin Adai, Chief Executive Officer, RTA Traffic and Roads Authority, said: “We have recently refurbished the lighting of 39 tunnels. This 6-month project involved some of Dubai’s famous tunnels including Airport Tunnel, Shindagha Tunnel , Dubai Mall Tunnel and Dubai World Trade Center Tunnel.”

“LED lighting fixtures have many environmentally friendly features such as consuming 60% less energy than conventional lighting fixtures and up to 177% longer lifetime compared to older lamps. New lamps have a lifetime of 50,000 hours compared to traditional The lighting fixtures have a lifetime of 18,000 hours, which reduces the frequency of lamp replacement and minimizes maintenance and operating costs,” said Bin Adai.

“Furthermore, energy losses and heat emissions are reduced by 20 percent compared to conventional lamps, thereby increasing the efficiency of the installation’s lighting operating system and the tunnel’s energy supply network,” she added.

According to her, the RTA carefully assessed the brightness level and color clarity inside the Dubai Tunnel when installing the new lighting installations to ensure optimum visibility for road users, thereby enhancing traffic safety.

“The LED lighting fixtures provide 6000 lumens of light intensity compared to the 4000 lumens of the old lamps, improving the quality of light. These fixtures do not contain environmentally harmful chemicals such as mercury in traditional lamps, which contributes to the RTA and Dubai to achieve environmental vision sustainability,” she added. –trade arab news agency
